České Budějovice is the biggest city in South Bohemian Region, and it’s also a cultural, administrative and economic center of this region. You can find it in the České Budějovice basin, where Vltava and Malše merge together. It’s a very important city, because there are many historical sights, museums and universities.
History of the city
The city has a very colorful past, which is being written since 1265. It was established by the Czech king Ottokar II of Bohemia. The reason behind the building of the city was to use is it as a support for his power against rising and very influential noble clan Vítkovci.
Sights and places of interest for tourists
České Budějovice has a historical center, where you can find many precious religious and secular buildings. There are beautiful houses, which are in gothic, renaissance and baroque style with unique arcade along the streets Krajinská, Česká, Kněžská, Dr: Stejskala and also all over the square.
For visitors we recommend to begin your walk in the heart of the city, visit the Square of Ottokar II of Bohemia, it’s one of the biggest squares in the whole Central Europe and it creates a perfect square (in terms of shape) with its dimensions of 133×133 meters.
Tourists will be intrigued with city hall in baroque style, which is very a dominant building in the square and it’s there since 1727 – 1730. Spreading facade has on itself the city symbol, which is surrounded with the symbols of Moravia, Bohemia and Silesia. On the side you can see an antic theme which represents important townsman virtues and these are bravery and loyalty.
Black tower is a landmark of the city, because its 72 meters high and it was the highest building in the town not that long ago. It was used as a bell tower. From the top you can see the whole city of Budějovice and the near area. The tower has 5 bells. Near the tower you can find baroque temple of St. Nicholas, which is from the 17th century.
Piaristické square represents very impressive historical place, where you can find the oldest building in the town and that is a Dominican monastery with the Presentation of Virgin Mary church from 1265. It’s the oldest sight of the city.
