Plzen can be found in the West Bohemia, it’s the fourth biggest city in Czech Republic. It’s a dominant place of West Bohemia Region in industrial, business and cultural sphere. Distinctive cultural and economic standard had a strong impact on the construction development. Historical center was in 1989 announced as the city sight reservation.

Distinctive and architectonically precious buildings are gothic temple of St. Bartholomew, baroque rebuilding of Archdean, renaissance city hall or Jewish synagogue.

History of the city

The city of Plzeň was established in 1295 on the merge of 4 rivers: Úhlava, Úslava, Rabuza, Mže. It was established by Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. Thanks to its geographic advantage between the city and borders, the city has been developing very quickly economically.

On the turn of the 19th and 20th century very demanding structures of the public buildings were finished, these are for example the City theatre, Townsmen talk, museum and others.19th in the time of industrialization, in these times in Plzeň there’re finished famous industrial companies: industrial complex of Škoda and Plzeňský Prazdroj. In the city you can also find the University of West Bohemia, which was established in 1991.

In the present day the city of Plzeň is growing modern metropolis of the West Bohemia. Touristic infrastructure is on a very good level. The unique quality of Plzeň was confirmed by the European city of culture title for the year 2015.

Sights and points of interest

The Square of the Republic was during the establishment of the city thanks to its size 139×193 meters one of the biggest in Europe. In 2007 it underwent a big reconstruction; it gained new pavement and also a modern fountains.

We can also mention Great Synagogue which is from the year 1893, and it represents Moorish-Romanesque style and it’s the second biggest synagogue in Europe.

Plzen city of beer

The lovers of the beer will be amazed, because in Plzeň is Plzeňský Prazdroj, the home of the worldly famous lager Pilsner Urquell. It’s the biggest brewery in Czech Republic. It was created in 1842.
